HEALTHCARE

Because children cannot learn, grow, or thrive when illness goes untreated.

Healthcare has always been part of Words in Action Haiti’s mission. In Qui-Croit, many families have lived far from reliable medical care, and untreated illness can affect a child’s ability to learn, grow, and stay in school.

From mobile clinics in the mountains to a community clinic in Qui-Croit, WIA has worked to bring care closer to families who had nowhere else to turn.

Our Healthcare Story

The Begining: Care Before the Clinic

While still in medical school, Dr. Claude Louis began organizing mobile medical clinics throughout Qui-Croit and the surrounding mountain communities, where many families walked five to six hours to reach the nearest doctor.

This is where WIA’s healthcare mission began: bringing care to people who can not easily reach it.

2010–2024: A Clinic That Became a Lifeline

In 2010, Words in Action Haiti opened its first clinic inside the local church. For six years, it served thousands of patients while a permanent clinic was being built on the land where Dr. Louis’s father had once built their family home.

On the clinic’s first day, Dr. Louis saw 72 patients, including a young mother and her two children who were diagnosed with tuberculosis and connected to life-saving treatment at no cost through the Baptist Haiti Mission Community Health Program.

As Haiti’s security crisis worsened, international medical teams could no longer travel safely. WIA continued the work through local nurses and, at one point, a volunteer physician.

Beyond the Clinic: Care That Changed Lives

WIA also helped patients access specialized medical care they could never have reached alone.

Through partnerships, a child with severe burn injuries received multiple reconstructive surgeries in the United States, and a young patient with a brain tumor considered inoperable in Haiti received life-saving surgery through a U.S. surgical team.

These stories show what becomes possible when medical care, partnership, and persistence come together.

2025 and Beyond: Continuing Care in a Time of Crisis

In January 2025, armed gangs occupied the WIA clinic, bringing years of healthcare work in Qui-Croit to an abrupt halt. But the mission did not end.

Unable to return safely to Qui-Croit, Dr. Louis shifted his medical outreach to Haitian communities in the Dominican Republic, caring for displaced families who were afraid to seek medical attention because of their immigration status.

Even in crisis, WIA continues to look for ways to reach vulnerable Haitian families with dignity, compassion, and care.

Where Are We Now

As security allows, Words in Action Haiti remains committed to restoring access to quality healthcare for the people of Qui-Croit while continuing to reach vulnerable Haitian communities wherever the need exists.

WIA is now preparing for future clinic restoration in a new location in Fort Jacques, so families can once again have access to trusted healthcare support close to home.

Help Us Restore Access to Care

Support for healthcare can help WIA prepare for the new clinic space, medical outreach, local nursing support, medications, supplies, and partnerships with healthcare professionals and medical teams.
